Despite rampant segregation in the South, some blacks were able to hold public office and by 1877 they were able to serve on juries. The African American vote counted and was a deciding factor in the 1968 election. Most African American's only knew farming and share cropped, but their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren would become better educated and help to bring about more changes in years to come.
