Why the civil war took place
There were many factors involved in the occurrence of the Civil War. The main and immediate cause of the war was slavery. Southern states, including the 11 states that formed the Confederacy, depended on slavery to push their economy. By 1860 the North and South had become two different regions, differing socially, economically, and politically on their views. The Union defeated the Confederates and began trying to better the Union. Lincoln was reelected in 1864 and therefore was continuing to try and repair the Union until he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. A twelve year reconstruction followed the war and heated debates about the status of blacks within the union were argued.
