The Roman games were the greatest spectacle of the time. There were no games that compared in size or scope as the ones in Rome. Although many of the games initially were connected to religious festivals, they gradually became more secular, and grew to become a large-scale institution. The games kept people entertained and happy, and without them the Roman Empire would not have lasted as long as it did.
