Most bird species and squirrels of the deciduous forest inhabit this layer. Other mammals such as raccoons, chipmunks, and opossums can be found climbing trees, but usually do not dwell in the canopies. Bears species have also been known to climb trees, but are rarely spotted doing such and do not make the canopy their home.
