The Cold War was an event that affected American and Soviet history tremendously. This political battle over communism cost the U.S. a significant amount. After just coming out of WWII, most countries were crushed to ruins. There were two major superpowers though, that were still on their feet. It is phenomenal though that Russia and the U.S. have now worked out their differences and have moved on. They now operate an International Space center (Mir) and are working on a new inter-continental space center. I find it amazing what these two superpowers can accomplish once they finally "see the light".
