He was born into the family's estate to James Roosevelt and Sara Delano Roosevelt. His father was a semi successful business man, and his mother had sizable trading investments in China. While still at Columbia, he fell in love with his distant cousin, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt. They married despite Franklin's mother's disapproval. On March 17, 1905, he married her in Theodore Roosevelt's presence. They had six children, but only five survived. The only problem that this couple faced was that his mother was very possessive of her son.
