Mysteries and uncertainties in day-to-day life have changed a lot since ancient times. The main reason for people following religion has remained exactly the same though. Unlike 2000 years ago, the Christians do not fear their God. Where they can feel safe simply by believing God is present everywhere and will look after them, the Olympian gods had no sympathy for human life whatsoever. Therefore, the ancients would need to work very hard for a sense of security.
