to Grant on April 9, 1865. Although Lee lost, he will always be remembered highly by both the North and the South. He was truly a great man, and did the most he could with the small, unorganized Confederate army. After the war Lee went on to become president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee College) in Shenandoah. Lee eventually died on October 12, 1870, but his legacy will be remembered for a long time ("Robert Edward Lee" 178).
