Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach. His father, Ambrosius Bach, was a town and court musician. As a child, Johann attended Eisenach's Latin school. At the age of ten, he became an orphan after the death of his mother and father. He was then sent to be raised by his older brother Johann Christoph Bach.

Overall, Johann Sebastian Bach had twenty children between two wives. Sadly, ten of them died in infancy. However, four became well known composers, including Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Johann Christian Bach.
Towards the end of 1749, his failing eyesight was operated on by a traveling English surgeon. The catastrophic result of the surgery was complete blindness. Bach nevertheless continued to compose, dictating his work to a pupil.
