They even had the chance to start a new and better life than before, but they did nothing. Smith attempted every possible solution there was to persuade the colonists to seize these chances and opportunities. I believe that the only way this situation could have been avoided was if the colonists had given their entire cooperation to Smith from the beginning. He held the knowledge that was capable of keeping the colony functioning and growing.
