way two boys learn to become mature and learn to deal with misfortune at a young age. Another use of symbolism is, the Devon and Nagaumsett Rivers. Which show how the boys at Devon prefer the Devon River to the Nagaumsett. Also one of Knowles symbols in the novel is the war as reality and how it has an effect on the students at Devon. Knowles uses symbolism as the main component in his novel.
